What exactly is OCPP?

OCPP, the Open Charge Point Protocol, is an open communication standard for electromobility, developed by the Open Charge Alliance. It governs data exchange between electric vehicles and charging stations, and enables central control of charge points by so-called charge point operators (charging network managers). Because it is an open standard and therefore a pure software solution, OCPP works seamlessly with hardware from a wide range of manufacturers — allowing the NRGkick to integrate smoothly into existing charging networks and energy management systems.

From the technical standard to practical application for your fleet.

Via the OCPP link, you connect a charge card to your NRGkick. From that moment on, reimbursement for home charging runs automatically via the charging network platform of your chosen partner, instead of you as an employer having to manually check every charging session. A third party is involved here, usually for a subscription fee; this partner receives all charge reports from your employees and processes them, so that you only need to make the final payment to your employees. This is a significant time saving, especially for large fleets.

The NRGkick supports OCPP 1.6, currently still the most widely used version within charging networks worldwide. The broader OCPP standard itself has continued to evolve: version 2.0.1 Edition 3 was recognised as an official IEC standard (IEC 63584) at the end of 2024, and version 2.1 — with additional functionality for distributed energy resources and vehicle-to-grid — appeared in early 2025. However, OCPP 1.6 remains the de facto standard among most charging network operators in Belgium and Europe.
