How does solar charging work with the NRGkick?

A photovoltaic installation converts sunlight into electricity. Your household consumes what it needs; if your installation generates more than you consume at a given moment, a surplus is created, which would normally simply be fed back into the grid. With solar charging, the NRGkick sends that surplus directly to your electric car’s battery instead of selling it to the grid — so you charge much more cheaply than at a public charging station or with electricity from the grid.

To use solar charging, you only need a software upgrade for your NRGkick, which you activate via the free NRGkick app. No extra hardware is required and you don’t need any programming knowledge: the feature is configured directly in the app and is fully set up within minutes.

In the NRGkick app you choose between three charging strategies: “Surplus charging”, where only the PV surplus is used, “100% Solar”, where only solar energy is used and charging pauses when there’s too little sun, and “Feed-in limit PLUS”, where you add a minimum amount of grid power so charging can always continue. Within each strategy you can also make individual adjustments, such as minimum or maximum charging current and delay time, and save up to 5 different profiles with your own preferences.

If your photovoltaic installation produces too little power at a given moment, you can simply pause charging until there’s enough sun again, or supplement the missing charging current from the grid via the “Feed-in limit PLUS” strategy. This way you never have to choose between waiting for the sun and still being charged in time.

Make sure you have a sufficiently sized solar panel system, so there is regularly enough surplus to charge your car. Where possible, connect your PV surplus charging to a smart home, for example in combination with a heat pump or home battery, to further optimise your energy use. Also regularly monitor your consumption and output via the app, so you can fine-tune your settings for even more efficient charging.
