Mandatory registration of your charging station

A plug-and-play charging cable doesn’t always need to be registered. See the rules for this on the page about charging via a wall socket.

Since June 2021, it has been mandatory to register your private charging station connected to the low-voltage grid with a power of 5 kVA or more with Fluvius. From now on, you can do this very easily via Mijn Fluvius.

Why do I need to register my charging station?

With the rise of electric vehicles, more and more people are also opting for a private charging station at home. However, more charging stations do put an extra strain on the electricity grid. That’s why the Flemish Utility Regulator requires charging stations to be registered with Fluvius.

This registration isn’t intended as a check, but as an important source of information for us. It allows us to detect peaks in power consumption and, where needed, adapt our electricity grid accordingly. This way we avoid possible problems on our network, and you can charge your car at home with peace of mind.

Charging via a wall socket with a control system

The first option is charging via an ordinary household socket with earthing. For this you use a charging cable (usually supplied when you buy an electric vehicle (EV)) fitted with an integrated protection device. This cable connects the vehicle to a household socket, but offers extra safety measures.

How does it work?

The integrated protection device (In-Cable Control and Protection Device, or IC-CPD) is essential because it fulfils the role of the safety and control unit that would normally be performed by the charging station. It includes protection mechanisms against overload and short circuits. The system can also communicate with the vehicle to ensure a safe charging process. This includes checking the connection status and adjusting the charging speed based on what the home’s and the car’s electrical systems can handle.

Registration

A socket charging cable doesn’t need to be registered with Fluvius as long as it can’t draw more than 5 kW of power from the grid. Can it draw more than 5 kW of power from the grid? Then you register the charging cable as a unidirectional charging station via mijn.fluvius.be/groenestroom.

Note: every (newly) connected socket on your indoor installation must be inspected in accordance with AREI regulations.
